P0014 means the exhaust camshaft on Bank 1 is stuck over-advanced — it has moved or remained further into the advance direction than the ECM commanded. The most common cause is dirty engine oil restricting the exhaust-side oil control valve (OCV).

What P0014 means

The ECM uses a duty-cycle signal to the exhaust-side OCV to rotate the exhaust camshaft timing gear assembly, optimising exhaust valve closing point. The ECM compares actual exhaust cam position to the target angle. P0014 is stored when the deviation between actual and target exhaust timing exceeds 5 degrees of crankshaft angle for 5 seconds or more after the OCV hold duty-ratio has reached its limit, AND there is no measurable cam movement after the OCV is forcibly activated for 10 seconds. Monitor runs at coolant temperature 75-100 degrees C, engine speed 500-4000 rpm, battery voltage 11 V or higher. P0014 requires 2-trip detection to illuminate the MIL; the related P0015 (exhaust cam over-retarded) requires only 1 trip.

Symptoms

  • Illuminated MIL after 2 warm drive cycles
  • Rough idle or stumble when fully warm — exhaust valve overlap is incorrect
  • Decreased fuel economy due to inability to optimise exhaust valve closing
  • Slightly elevated NOx emissions

Common causes

  • Dirty or sludged engine oil blocking the exhaust-side OCV oil passages — the most frequent cause
  • Clogged exhaust OCV oil filter screen restricting oil flow to the actuator
  • Faulty exhaust-side camshaft timing oil control valve solenoid (electrical or mechanical failure)
  • Exhaust camshaft VVT gear assembly worn or seized in the advanced position
  • Low oil level or incorrect oil viscosity reducing the hydraulic pressure that drives retard movement
  • Jumped or stretched timing chain allowing the exhaust cam to sit ahead of the commanded position

Diagnostic approach

  1. Perform an exhaust OCV active testCommand the exhaust VVT OCV (Bank 1) from 0% to 100% duty cycle using a scan tool while monitoring VVT Change Angle and engine speed. At 0% the engine idles normally; at 100% the idle should become rough or the engine may stall, confirming oil pressure reaches the exhaust actuator. No response at any duty cycle indicates OCV or oil pressure problems.
  2. Check oil condition, level and viscosityThe VVT system is entirely oil-pressure driven. Low oil level or wrong viscosity (too thick) prevents the exhaust gear from retarding on command. Verify the oil is at the correct level and matches the manufacturer specification. Using heavier oil than specified (e.g. 5W-30 where 0W-20 is required) delays actuator response enough to trigger P0014.
  3. Inspect and service the exhaust OCV oil filter screenRemove the exhaust-side OCV filter screen. Examine for sludge or metallic debris. A blocked screen deprives the actuator of oil even when the OCV solenoid is commanding movement. Clean or replace the screen and address the underlying oil condition before returning the vehicle to service.
  4. Test exhaust OCV solenoid resistanceDisconnect the exhaust OCV harness connector and measure resistance across the solenoid terminals. The specification on dual-VVT Toyota V6 applications is typically 6-7 ohms. An open circuit (infinite resistance) or shorted winding (near 0 ohms) means the solenoid cannot respond to the ECM duty signal and must be replaced.
  5. Check for a jumped timing chain if oil-related causes are excludedRemove the cylinder head cover, rotate the crankshaft to the 0-degree timing mark, and verify exhaust camshaft alignment marks match the cap index marks. Misalignment that does not correct at TDC + 360 degrees indicates the timing chain has jumped — the exhaust cam is physically displaced beyond what oil pressure can retard.
