Overview

Unlike the newer Civic, the HR-V Mk2 did not have the electronic parking brake across the whole range. Higher trims and many EU cars got the EPB (with Automatic Brake Hold); base trims used a traditional handbrake lever, and some markets used rear drum brakes. The right pad-change method depends entirely on which system your car has, so identify it before you start.

Step-by-step

  1. Identify the parking-brake typeA small pull switch on the console = electronic parking brake (EPB). A pull-up lever between the seats = cable handbrake. If the rear has drums, it uses shoes, not pads.
  2. EPB cars: retract with a scan toolIgnition on, doors closed, Honda-capable EPB tool (HDS or aftermarket) connected. Command the EPB maintenance/inspection mode to open/retract the calipers.
  3. EPB cars: replace pads, then re-calibrateSwap the pads, command 'close caliper' to re-apply, pump the pedal firmly, cycle the EPB apply/release a few times, check for no warning and take a short drive.
  4. Cable-handbrake cars: wind the piston inNo electronics — the rear caliper piston screws in. Turn it clockwise while pushing with a rear-caliper wind-back tool until it seats, then fit the new pads.
  5. Drum-brake cars: service the shoesIf the rear has drums, this is a shoe-and-drum service, not a pad change; follow the standard rear-drum procedure.

Important

  • On EPB cars, never force, clamp or wind the rear pistons back by hand — the motor-on-caliper actuator will be damaged. They must be retracted electronically in service mode.
  • Do not assume your HR-V has an EPB — a large share of Mk2 cars have a cable handbrake or drums, where a scan tool is neither needed nor correct.
  • On EPB cars, always re-calibrate and test the parking brake after the pad change; skipping it can leave a fault or weak clamp.

Why must EPB pistons be retracted electronically?

Because a motor on each caliper drives the piston in and out. Forcing it with a clamp while the motor holds the spindle strips the gears or burns the motor, so it must be wound back through service mode.
