P0011 Quick Answer

Unlike P0010 (electrical), P0011 is a rationality fault where the mechanical or hydraulic response is wrong. The first thing to check is engine oil level, condition, and viscosity — many P001-range faults are oil-driven before they are electrical.

What Does P0011 Mean?

A Camshaft Position – Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1). Bank 1 intake VVT system is reporting the cam phase is more advanced than commanded — or the system response does not match expectations. Unlike P0010 (electrical), P0011 is a rationality fault where the mechanical or hydraulic response is wrong.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light, sometimes intermittent at first
  • Rough idle, especially at cold start
  • Loss of low-end torque or hesitation off the line
  • Higher fuel consumption
  • Possible faint rattle on cold start from the phaser locking pin

Common Causes

  • Stuck VVT actuator (cam phaser internal failure, hydraulic lock advanced)
  • VVT oil control solenoid stuck open or partially blocked
  • Restricted oil supply — clogged screen on the solenoid, sludge in oil galleries
  • Worn timing chain causing cam-to-crank correlation drift (often co-codes with P0016)
  • Incorrect engine oil viscosity — too thick disables phaser response, too thin masks pressure
  • Failed cam phaser bolt or internal phaser lock pin failure

Diagnosis Steps

You’ll need a scan tool capable of reading live powertrain data, a digital multimeter, and access to the wiring diagram for the specific platform.

  1. Verify oil level, condition, and viscosity — wrong oil is the most common root cause on platforms with tight VVT tolerances.
  2. Read live data and compare commanded vs actual cam phase angle through an idle-to-rev sweep. P0011 is set when actual exceeds commanded by a calibrated threshold for a calibrated time.
  3. Remove and inspect the VVT solenoid screen for sludge or metal debris. A blocked screen is responsible for a large fraction of P0011 cases.
  4. Inspect timing chain for stretch — measure cam-to-crank offset against spec. Stretched chains advance the cam mechanically and trip P0011.
  5. Check timing chain tensioner operation. A failed tensioner allows the chain to skip a tooth, advancing cam timing.

Possible Fixes

  • Clean or replace the VVT oil control solenoid and screen
  • Engine oil and filter service with correct viscosity
  • Timing chain and tensioner replacement on high-mileage engines (often a kit job — chain, tensioner, guides, and sometimes phaser)
  • Cam phaser replacement if the unit itself has failed mechanically

Can I Still Drive With P0011?

The vehicle will usually still drive with P0011 stored, but performance and fuel economy are degraded. The fault disables or limits the affected actuator, and the PCM may inhibit emissions monitors. Drive to a workshop, but don’t ignore the code long-term — VVT and EVAP failures often cascade into related faults if left untreated.

How Serious Is This Code?

P0011 is a moderate-priority fault. It will not prevent the engine from running but will affect drivability, emissions, and over time can damage related components (cam phaser wear, catalytic converter on EVAP-related codes). Address within a few drive cycles.
