- Locate the control — Look first for a physical button marked with an 'A' inside a circular arrow on the centre stack near the climate controls. If there is none, open the infotainment screen.
- Toggle start/stop off with the engine running — Press the button, or in the touchscreen go to the vehicle/assistance (or climate) settings and switch Start/Stop off. A cluster message confirms it is deactivated.
- Confirm it is off — The engine will no longer shut down at a standstill for the rest of this drive.
- Re-enable when you want it back — Toggle it again, or simply restart the car — start/stop re-arms on the next engine start.
Important
- The off state does not stick — the Mk4 re-arms start/stop at every engine start; there is no factory menu setting that survives an ignition cycle (this is a change from the Mk3).
- Owners sometimes disable it lastingly by coding (OBDeleven/VCDS, which is limited and unreliable on the Mk4) or by unplugging the J367 battery-monitor control unit — both are non-factory and can affect warranty and battery management. Not recommended.
- Start/stop will not stop the engine when the battery charge is low, the cabin still needs heating or cooling, or the engine is cold — that is normal protective behaviour.
FAQ
Can I permanently disable start/stop on the Octavia Mk4?
Not through any factory setting. Unlike the Mk3, the Mk4 provides no menu option that is remembered between drives, so you must switch it off each time. Coding and the J367-unplug workaround exist but are non-factory and carry risks.
My Octavia has no start/stop button — where is it?
On many Mk4 trims the physical button was dropped and the toggle lives in the touchscreen, under the vehicle or climate settings. Look there if you can't find a hard button on the centre stack.
Why does start/stop behave differently day to day?
The system reads battery state of charge, cabin temperature demand and engine temperature. On cold mornings or with the climate working hard it will keep the engine running even when armed.
Does start/stop harm the engine or battery?
MQB cars use an AGM/EFB battery and reinforced starter designed for frequent restarts, so normal use is fine. The battery is a specific type — match it when replacing.
